The Bell Tower
BELL NOTES
When the plans for a Church were drawn up, it was decided to include a ring of six bells. Since then the bells of Drumbo have in the words of the belfry prayer cheered the sick, warned the heedless and called all willing hearts to prayer and praise. Later two further bells were added.
The main purpose of the bells is to ring for services and in doing so mark the passing of the Church year.
We ring to welcome the birth of Jesus at Christmas, half muffled on Good Friday to mark the Crucifixion of Christ and on Easter Day to celebrate the Resurrection. We also ring to mark national occasions such as royal weddings and half muffled on Remembrance Day.
The bells of all the U K have been asked to ring in November to mark the centenary of the end of the First World War. It is estimated to have every bell in the U K ringing we will need to recruit at least 2000 more ringers, of this Drumbo needs 5/6 recruits.
This could be the last time we do this. Why? We have eight bells and only five ringers, to be sensitive almost all qualify for bus passes. Over the last few years we have only recruited two new ringers and we have lost one of those to university. We need to have at least four ringers each Sunday. This can be difficult allowing for sickness and holidays.
While we can ring, health permitting to a ripe old age we are on a knife edge. Like many other towers we rely on help from other towers to ring midweek.
If you want the bells to continue ringing into the future we must recruit new ringers or encourage previous ringers to return.
You are welcome to the tower on Sunday morning at about 10.30am to see what we do
